I’m Sonja Alves, and I’m the Moggler (mommy + blogger = moggler) around here. My husband, Nuno, and I are parents to Paulo a.k.a “The Whuff” who is the real star of the show. Paulo Henry Alves was born on March 9, 2011 and has been whuffling since birth – hence his nickname and the name of this blog. He now has graduated to babbling a great deal and will voice loud and incomprehensible opinions about wheels, crayons, and his stinkiest bear – Nigel.

As for me, I’m 31, an artist by education (I have a B.A. in studio art from Hampshire College) and a nanny by trade. I’ve spent most of my adult life with people under the age of five, and that’s generally how I like it. I also like reading, crossword puzzles, sweet tea, and Anne Boleyn – among other things. I live in Boston and am a proud Vermonster by birth. In addition to being a mom and an artist, I’m also a Buddhist, a Virgo, and a trained singer.

How did you come up with Paulo’s name? It’s Portuguese – as is Nuno. So, not too much creativity there. Before I got pregnant we’d agreed that Nuno would name the girls and I’d name the boys. I’d had a name picked out for well over a decade… that has since become much more popular than it was a decade ago. It also just didn’t feel “right.” So, a few nights before the ultrasound we were out having burgers and I mentioned that I thought we needed a new boy’s name. We agreed we wanted a European name and started with German names, then Swedish, then French, then Swiss (which were like German names but worse) and then I asked about Portuguese names. Up until that point I thought that Nuno specifically *didn’t* want a Portuguese name, but it really just hadn’t occurred to him. With the caveats that it had to be pronounceable in English and contain no accents of any kind, Nuno started listing a few off. I loved Paulo and it just… stuck. That was it. End of story. I swear the baby named himself as really, came out of East Nowhere.

How did you and Nuno meet? On the commuter rail between PVD and Boston. I started talking to him and we exchanged email addresses.

  2. Hi,

My name is Laura and I fell upon your blog when googling Piglet pictures for my baby’s “I am five months old today” sign. I needed to comment because my baby girl was born March 15th of this year and I live in Attleboro. I read your Paulo’s birth story and marveled at the small world we live in that it was your page I stumbled on. Congratulations on your handsome boy, and I hope you’re loving motherhood as much as I am. 🙂

  3. Always up for meeting a fellow New Englander. I’m from New Hampshire, though. Please like me anyway, Ms Vermonster. (and I”m a girl so I’m not creeping on you. See? I’m wicked smaht).

  4. Fantastic art – great work
