It’s been a good week for us – most notably, it’s NEW! COMPUTOR! week. My old MacBook is 2 1/2 years old and can’t run big programs (like Photoshop or – perhaps more importantly – THE SIMS) without slowness and freezing. It’s not dead yet, but it’s certainly not going to last much longer as something useful to me. So, since we got a little extra money for Christmas – I got to upgrade to a new 15″ MacBook Pro. And holy cow, it’s so gorgeous! And it has that new computer smell! AMAZING!
We’ve also had a lot of fun this week with Oma visiting and going to playgroup. So many playgroups have been in the mornings, which is when Whuff naps (or used to nap… he’s not been doing so well with the morning nap this week and today I’m trying possibly cutting down to ONE nap. Beer me strength.) and we’ve been going to this Thursday afternoon group as often as we can, though we’ve found that we’re very often the only baby there. We’ve met another mama/baby pair who also frequent the Thursday group, but it’s been slow going connecting to other mamas – which is starting to get frustrating since we’ve been here almost six months now. Anyhow! There were FIVE! other babies at playgroup this week and it was wonderful and amazing and I’m really thrilled to have more mamas to connect with and other babies for The Whuff to stick his fingers in their eyes… I mean, play with them. Seriously though, this kid is fascinated with eyes and how sparkly they are they must be great for fingers, RIGHT?!
Anyhow. In honor of NEW! COMPUTOR! week, a new sort of feature – a weekly roundup of links!
Things! I’ve read! That you might also enjoy reading!
This article on Salon purports to tell the “Truth About Epidurals.” It’s a really great article if you’re figuring out your birth plan and want more info about the risks of epidurals, however, I will point out that I did experience exactly the sort of complications that she claims to debunk. (Feel free to ask for specifics if you like.) I have zero regrets, but I also hope to go without one next time around.
A Slice of… Providence, Rhode Island. Adriana of Just By Living gives a tour of the PVD on Sometimes Sweet. I love this so much and yet there’s so much I could add – Brickway! The Liberty Elm! Books on the Square! Sicilia’s! Hudson St. Deli! I do love it here in The Happy Valley, but I’ll confess – I miss the PVD something fierce. It was my home for six years and I seriously pine for it. I’d move back in a heartbeat if it were an option for us.
The Hidden Mother is about the weirdest photography related phenomenon I’ve ever seen. Missing is an explanation for why the mother herself is not photographed. Is the blanket seen as less distracting? Is the mom really ugly? Seriously – I’d like some answers.
Shit People Say to Breastfeeding Moms. Now that I’m done breastfeeding this time around, I can confidently say that I never got flack once ever for breastfeeding. However… I also live in such a hippie-fied area that the very first time I saw a baby (as in, younger than 6mos) formula fed was on the plane home from Portugal. Every other mama I’ve met has breastfed. Yeah, I kinda live in a bit of a bubble.
